Just what is ‘Daka-ware’ anyway?

The Harry Davies Company (now Davies Molding) with Bakelite, along with other brands of plastic molding material, advertised outside its doors.

‘Daka-ware’ was a trade name used by Davies Molding back in the 1960s for a line of moulded phenolic knobs, handles, and ashtrays. That’s right, ashtrays. Like ‘Bakelite’, another phenolic material which found use in electrical fixtures and fittings, Daka-ware can withstand much higher temperatures than ABS or PVC plastics. Today Davies still use machine tools that have the Daka-ware name on them, for example knobs for Effectrode effects pedals are manufactured using Daka-ware moulds. Davies even have a few hundred of the original Daka-ware ashtrays in stock! I was looking for Dakaware knobs for my Rickenbacker sunburst 360/12, the large brown knobs with the long shaped, gold color diamond insert in the top. They are easy to find searching the computer. BUT ……I wanted a BLACK color version to really look correct on the guitar. After searching the internet forever, nothing showed up, nor any mention of any black ones being made. No one had ever heard of a black version.
I bought several of the gold diamond Dakaware four knobs sets, enough to prepare, prime, and paint enough knobs to choose the best of the best when finished.
While paint was drying, I was looking for something in my electronics “junk and whatever parts” box. Pulling back on the wad of wire on top of other parts on the bottom, something black caught my vision. Reaching in and turning it over, I was in total shock !!!!!!!
I was holding a black Dakaware knob, the black version of the classic Dakaware brown with gold diamond center !!!!!!!!!!!!!! It had a shiny aluminum diamond center !!!!!!!!! Had the same words as the brown knobs stamped on the back !!!!
Only one black knob …….. Have NO idea where it came from !!! ….. But …. they really were produced in black color.
My gloss black paint on those bake lite knobs looks great on the guitar. I made chrome plated brass diamonds for the centers to match the guitar chrome.
