Perfect ‘Echorec’ heads!

Mind the gap! Take a look at this beautiful workmanship by Terry Summer of ‘Summertone’—a newly relapped Binson ‘Echorec’ delay playback head. If you look very closely you might just be able to make out the ‘gap’, a microscopically narrow line between the two magnetic pole pieces of the tiny horseshoe magnet that is the working end of the head. The narrower the gap the better the high frequency response, meaning a correctly set-up Binson machine exhibits a superb high frequency response, with absolutely no loss of highs—the sound of David Gilmour’s guitar on Pink Floyd’s ‘The Dark Side Of The Moon‘.

Like all mechanical mechanisms such as cars, guitars and tape machines, Echorecs require periodic maintenance to ensure they’re working at their best. The drum requires a periodic clean and light oiling to minimise frictional wear between the head and the rotating drum and to ensure hi-fidelity audio performance. However, over the years it’s likely that the machine will require head alignment and even head profiling (relapping) because of the inevitable wear of moving parts. Head alignment is not as serious as it sounds and any technician with access to basic electronic test equipment can undertake the task, but it does require a not inconsiderable amount of patience and skill. I’ll be posting more information about the electronic test procedure for head alignment in the coming weeks. Relapping is another matter though, best carried out by a seasoned and trusted professional—a man’s got to know his limitations…
