Copper Core Jack Plugs

A system is only as good as its weakest link. Given that your amp, guitar and anything you connect between them constitutes a system it’s worth giving a little consideration as the the effects pedals and interconnects you use between them. Think about it. Are you playing a good quality guitar? Is it fitted with custom pickups? And your amp, is it a vintage or boutique tube amp? Well if that is the case, you certainly wouldn’t want to compromise the gorgeous tone of such a rig with cheap, mass manufactured electronics nor leads fitted with poor quality jack plugs. There are some great quality connectors out there and some which are just plain lousy (for more info on jack plug quality check out: Jack Plugs – The Gold, the Brass and the Cheap). This article gives an impartial assessement on G&H Industries jack plugs.

A customer recently asked my if I’d ever used guitar leads with G&H jack plugs. I hadn’t even heard of the company let alone used their products as there are no distributors over here in the UK. I’d been using German manufactured Neutrik jack plugs for almost 30 years, and even though I was totally happy with their build and sound quality, in the spirit of scientific curiosity (more truthfully mild G.A.S. – gear aquisition syndrome) I decided I should check G&H out and find out if they had anything new to bring to the table.

I contacted Paul Haas of G&H Industries who very kindly mailed me a few samples of their jack plug part number: BF2PMNNN to evaluate. This plug has a copper core as do all their plugs. G&H construct plugs using this unique method to ensure they will not break or loosen under normal use and often even survive abuse. When assembled the “hot” and “ground” are separately staked, insuring they will not loosen. The core is oxygen free copper which gives the plug a distinctive appearance with its copper tip, which is a superior conductor to competitor’s plugs with brass or steel cores. It allows the plug to bend, not break – you can bend it back and finish the gig. The G&H RFQP jack plugs are available with three body options of varying opening diameters to accomodate different cable diameters:

Additionally the insulators used by G&H are made of nylon, which does not shrink over time versus oher types of insulator material, which will eventually shrink and cause the plug to stop functioning or create crackles or buzzing noises. It’s good to see a manufacturer paying this much attention to the important details of tone and reliability.

G&H Industries are based in Pennsylvania, U.S.A. It’s great to see a quality plug like this with absolutely no skimping in the quality (or quantity – these are pretty hefty in comparison to other plugs I’ve seen) of material used in the construction and it’s actually manufactured in the U.S.A. WordPress also sets a few wp-settings-{time}-[UID] cookies. The number on the end is your individual user ID from the users database table.
