First glimpse inside the new Effectrode workshop

For over twenty years been a dream of mine to have my own dedicated work studio and this summer that dream was realised. In April a team of local builders began laying the foundations down and over the next three months, brick by brick I saw my new workshop rise up. I was so enthusiastic about this historical milestone event for Effectrode that I made a time-lapse video of the construction work taking a photo every 10 minutes for 3 months! If you own one of our pedals, then somewhere in this workshop is a brick with your name it and I want to thank everyone who has supported Effectrode over the years and made this possible. THANKYOU!

As you can see from the picture, the workshop is empty at the moment but over the coming months we’ll be installing workbenches, electrical test equipment and all the other paraphernalia necessary to build fantastic effects pedals. It’s a significant step for us, probably not that interesting to you guys, however once we employ a couple of extra technicians to help out, it does mean we’ll be able to get new effect pedal designs more quickly produced and hopefully not run out of stock so often.

Acoustode? The above reference to it was the first that I heard of it. Worth notifying the email list about that one. I haven't got an acoustic at the moment but having just found your webpage for it I must say that it does look very tempting. :DJust played through my septet of Effectrodes this afternoon. Every time playing through them my understanding of how they interact gets deeper & their inherent musicality becomes even more sonorous.My collection being mostly primarily gain-based the potential for tonal nuance is vast just switching in & out different combinations. Using an expression pedal with the Tube-Vibe is essential for really opening up things further in an interactive way.Using a high quality wah & guitar volume knob & pickup selector again exponentially increases the possibilities. Even without the wah the musical feedback is so easily coaxed out of this setup.Les Paul humbuckers & SG P90's were loving it all, Used the same settings on the Effectrodes, sounds different with each but still fantastic with either.

Hi Troy, thanks for taking the time to write down your thoughts on this. You're right, pedal interaction has a significant effect on tone. It's definitely part of my design process, but so subtle and complex I haven't been able to work up to writing an in-depth article or making a demo of it... yet. I'm sure it will happen at some point though. All the best, Phil

Phil everything you do is incredible as is your passion for building incredible guitar tone, I have learned so much about tubes in general just from reading all these articles and the PDF of the RCA receiving tube manual that you post on here, almost everything on my pedal board is effectrode, I can't wait for the delta trem, the acoustode and the delay, please please please come out with that delay :)

Hi Vince, Thankyou for your kind words. They've given me a much needed boost in this rainy, damp weather we are having here. Winter is on the way. We're working hard on the Delta-Trem and the new Phaseomatic. They'll be the next pedals we release. Thanks again for your support!

At this rate I'll have the entire bottom course of that back wall bricked up in my honour! ;-) Not everyone feels this way...... but there's a very real sense of accomplishment and excitement about the future and what's to come when you're staring at a new workshop build. I used to live in Preston and would often convince 'the management' we should head off down Philips Rd if we were ever over Blackburn way to soak in the 'vibe'..... truly inspiring stuff. Congrats Phil..... you deserve a lot of credit for your work.

Hey Justin, Thankyou for your kind words. That's exactly how I thought about Mullard/Philips. The tubes manufactured by Mullard have such a legendary reputation that I had to visit Blackburn and walk about the hallowed grounds to see what remained there, see how I would feel once there and write something about it for posterity. One can't overlook the importance of this, afterall the ECC83 (12AX7) really is the heart of rock and roll as it's the usually the first tube that your guitar pickup 'sees' and it's responsible for a substantial part of the harmonics and tone of overdriven guitar sounds.
