The Tube-Vibe was designed as an all tube version of the transistorised Uni-Vibe (as used by Jimi Hendrix), the ethos being to create a vibe effects pedal with the tonal charactersitics and ‘feel’ of a vintage tube amp. But great guitar tone isn’t just about construction and design, it’s also about metallurgy and materials, that is, the quality of the metal alloys, mica washers and glass used in the manufacture of the tubes.
Nothing has ever surpassed the quality of tubes manufactured during the 1960s and no amount of cryogenic treatment, tube matching or marketing hype will ever compensate for not utilising high quality materials in the construction of vacuum tube. The good news is that new old stock (N.O.S.) are still available today and at reasonable prices too. Pictured above is a Tube-Vibe fitted with a N.O.S. Mil-Spec Philips 6189 tube, which is a replacement for a 12AU7. Why not give one try? You might be surprised at the results.
