Ta-Da! Model PM-3A Phaseomatic Deluxe Update #3

We’re fast approaching winter solstice and I wanted to get the artwork finalised for the new model Phaseomatic tube phaser effects pedal before the year is out. Here’s a nice shot of the Phaseomatic diecast aluminium enclosure fresh from painting and having the lettering silkscreened onto it. Star Trek fans migh notice I’m getting a little creative with my photography capturing some J.J. Abrams style lens flare from the winter sun in this shot! We’re aiming to have the new model Phaseomatic (and Delta-Trem tube tremolo pedal) back in production early next year.

Hi Phil, thans for your answer. Think i'm going to sign up for the delta trem as well. I'm also looking for a good boutique analoge chorus effect that equals effectrode standards. Besides the vibra chorus, what do you consider to be very good alternatieve chorus effects for the vibra chorus. Kind regards!Ed

Hi Phil,I know that you are planning on releasing the delta trem and phaseomatic simultaneously. I am on the waiting list for the phaseomatic. However, with regard to the delta trem I'm having second thoughts. I love the way the delta trem sounds, but I have a Marshall 1973x handwired (tube amp) with a tremelo effect built in. Is it still worth to have a tremolo effect if you already have one in your tube amp? The price for the effect is not the issue. I would just like to know if there are still good eneogh reasons to buy the delta trem (options on the delta trem, sound etc.)Kind regards,Ed

Hi Ed, It all depends what you want out of your trem. Amp may just be the just the ticket, however if you're in the market for more flexibility on different tremolo timbres, stereo panning, accented tremolo, better tone, etc then the Delta-Trem has to be the way forward in my opinion. Best regards, Phil

Hello Phil, any idea about the dimensions of the Echorec 3? i'd like to reserve a spot for it already on my pedal board!

My vote would be same size as current versions of Tube-Vibe, Tube Drive & Blackbird & the coming revamped Delta-Trem & the Phaseomatic Deluxe. Any bigger & I don't know where I'd fit the thing!

I can't imagine the echorec being the same size as effectrodes current "big-box" models. In my mind, it will be a replica of the old units, perhaps with a little more sofisticated remote foot controller than the older ones. I wouldn't want such a nice piece of equipment on the pedalboard. It should be right there on top of the amp heads!

I have no plans to add the Binson delay to my setup. I've limited my budget for my board building and there are a couple of pedals that do a credible job at simulating the sounds of the vintage units. I suspect the Effectrode version will be larger than my Blackbird and the modulation pedals. Regardless of size, if I did add one I'd opt to mount it on the amp, or on the table next to my recording desk. I'm at an age where I like controls to be within easy reach and not on the floor. Either way, the design definitely calls for a dedicated jack to add a remote bypass switch that would sit on the floor.

I have given this some thought just now - how to squeeze maximum Echorec control into a box the size of (for example) the Blackbird, with about the same number of knobs/dials, switches & sockets.Presumably this would be a lot more cost effective than a chassis emulating the original in size & (relative to the Effectrode range - as it stands) ornateness. This is what I imagine would be close to the perfect control-set (including layout) for an Effectrode Echorec-inspired pedal:** REAR SOCKETS & SWITCHES:From left to right when looking at the rear of pedal (or from right to left when looking from front of pedal)* Switch 1: A switch to choose whether the on-off effect bypass foot-switch selects true bypass or “valved up” signal flow when in off/bypass mode (if this won’t fit externally then could be internal - although less useful)* Switch 2: “Echo”/“Repeat”/“Swell” selector switch* Input socket* Output socket* CV/expression socket 1: For controlling tempo externally via “Time Traveller” device or similar - or via expression pedal* CV/expression socket 2: For controlling one of three parameters (as selected by “Switch 3”)* Switch 3: Selects CV2 sweepable foot control of Feedback, Delay Level or Input LevelPossibly also: A remote switcher jack - maybe could fit between Input & switch(es)?** FOOTSWITCHES: (From right to left when looking from front of pedal)* Bypass (with LED effect/bypass status indicator)* Tap Tempo (with LED tempo indicator)** TOP MOUNTED KNOBS & SELECTOR SWITCHES: (From right to left when looking from front of pedal)* “Input Control”: Input level control for driving the valves* “Length of Swell”: Feedback repeat number* “Volume”: Delay level control* “Bass/Treble”: EQ subtly moving from darker to lighter toned repeats* “Switch”: Selects all combinations of heads with detent positions for “click-click confidence” - doubles for replicating combinations enabled by original “Switch control” & the three buttons (plus any others if possible - maybe this control could be split over two knobs/switches to allow for easier “dialling in”)* “Echo Time”: Tempo control by dial* Tempo control switch: 3-position knob/switch selects tempo controller (“Echo Time” dial/Tap Tempo foot-switch/CV socket 1)Possibly also:* Sweepable control to simulate age/wear of bearings & drive mechanismThis would put the number of knobs (including detent switches) at maximum the same number as on the Blackbird, i.e. 9.** INTERNAL:* A “kill dry” switch for optional use in some amp’s parallel loops (not that my amps have them but some might)** LAMPS:* “Magic Eye” level indicator

Typo correction:** TOP MOUNTED KNOBS & SELECTOR SWITCHES: (From right to left when looking from front of pedal)Should read: (From left to right when looking from front of pedal)

Upon further reflection these two controls would be better swapped out in terms of placement on unit* Switch 2: “Echo”/“Repeat”/“Swell” selector switch [On top of pedal rather than at rear]* Tempo control switch: 3-position knob/switch selects tempo controller (“Echo Time” dial/Tap Tempo foot-switch/CV socket 1) [At rear of pedal rather than on top]

Avatar for Troy

Well whenever it comes out I hope that it's not before it's ready. I share your eager anticipation though. That would be the piece de resistance on my Effectrode board. I have some other nice delays that can keep its place warm until its arrival (a tap-tempo analogue plus two compact pedals that are more than usable tonal emulators of the Binson Echorec & Maestro Echoplex.I really would prefer not getting another Binson Echorec-inspired unit until Phil's design is completed, manufactured & released (though there are a couple of others out there dedicated to emulating the Echorec to varying degrees, plus a couple of others at least that include emulations of it on multi-delays).I have no doubt that it will more than make up for the wait (though yeah I would be amiss if I didn't add that a 2017 realisation of the long-prepared & awaited project would be most welcome.I'd imagine that there would be a fair few months before anything else came out from Effectrode HQ following the release of the revamped Delta-Trem & Phase-o-matic though so I'm not holding my breath just yet!

Aside from the all-important selection of the perfect gold finish I would put on my wish-list for the Echo unit:A switch to choose whether the on-off effect bypass foot-switch selects true bypass or "valved up" signal flow when in off/bypass mode; a "kill dry" switch for optional use in some amp's parallel loops (not that my amps have them but some might); expression/CV sockets fir as many parameters as possible (selectable use via small switches if necessary); echo/repeat/swell selector; input level control for driving the valves; bass to treble EQ control; tap temp (as well as knob control for tempo) "heads" combination selection mechanism that is as intuitive, logical & ergonomic as possible. How that lot would fit into a standard larger box Effectrode casing I am not sure! :DAlso: My references for the Echorec 2 are Syd Barrett (especially on the "Tonight Let's Make Love In London" two song soundtrack by early Pink Floyd in '67) & Gilmour's subsequent use in PF (especially on the "Live In Pompei" soundtrack with "Echoes").I suspect that this is the case for most other lovers of the Echorec sound. Some serious sonic study to determine how significant or not any mechanically-induced chorusing/vibrato-esque effects from drum wear is actually part of the sound (or not) on these benchmark recordings is worth considering before eliminating such a feature altogether.Maybe there wouldn't be enough space to have such a "feature" to have its own control if other dedicated controls replicating those from the original machines would have to be eliminatedJust some late night musings on this! :) .

Dear Phil, please tell us the approximate release date for the Echorec as soon as possible - I guess a lot of people (me included) can't wait much longer.. :-) By the way: Any plans for a tube based Wah-Wah?

Avatar for Phil

Hi Matthias, The Echorec is still a long way away. I've had a quite a few health issues which have slowed me down this year. We'll be making an announcement about where Effectrode is at over the next few days. I have thought of a wah and have a schematic I started putting together, so that may be on the cards too, but first I need to get the delay finished first.

Hi PhilI just read on the UK store page that the Delta-Trem is "Coming 2017". Is that the case with both that & the Phaseomatic Deluxe?Be useful to know so as I know whether or not I should allocate spends for two more Atomic power supplies before their release (rather then after - or if they're scheduled for different releases then maybe get one Atomic when each pedal is released). Also: Are there any changes or refinements to the Delta-Trem or Phase-o-matic designs since the last updates that can be shared as tantalising tidbits?

Doesn't the Atomic power supply power several of your tube pedals at the same time? That's what I gathered while wandering around the site. Seemed like Troy was thinking he needed one for each pedal. Personally, I don't mind wall warts. With my conventional gear I like to stagger the powering up process so everything doesn't come on all at the same time. I have a couple of power strips with individually switched outlets. Works good for me. That's less of an issue for me with tube gear. Having two Effectrode pedals on my board now, along with the little PC-2A compressor, and plans to add the tremolo (and now the phaser as well since it will be out soon) I'm thinking I'll invest in a single Atomic p.s. to run the larger pedals from. Cheers. R.M.

Troy September 27, 2016 at 11:43:28 Log in to Reply

Yes Robert you are correct, the Atomics have for four outlets.I already have two one board with two Atomics powering seven Effectrodes: a Mercury, PC-2A, Fire Bottle, Glass-A, Tube-Vibe, Tube Drive & Blackbird.I intend to get the revamped Delta-Trem & the Phase-o-matic when the come out (current ETA early 2017) plus the Binson Echorec-inspired Echo-Delay/Echorec 3º or whatever it ends up being called when that hopefully sees the light of day.Possibly might acquire a Helios on the second-hand market. So that would be nine or 10 Effectrodes. I will get one more Atomic for that board. One of the four outlets on the Atomics can be used for 9 volts, so I could run some other pedals off of that: tuner, a clone of an Echoplex EP-3 plus some pedal du jour (or more if they can be squeezed in somewhere as that outlet can be used for "daisy chaining" too.The second new Atomic would be to run a PC-2A, Glass-A & Blackbird that I have on another board. I also have another Mercury on the pedal shelf that an Atomic could fire up on that second board if I add it to that.Effectrode's place in the vertical SPECTRE-um of tonal quality in guitar pedals is reflected in the title of the theme song sung by Carly Simon for the 1977 James Bond film "The Spy Who Loved Me": "Nobody Does It Better" :)

Got it Troy. I didn't pick up on the extent of your Effectrode pedal garden from your previous post. Makes perfect sense. Along the way I've picked up a habit of asking rhetorical questions when it seems an answer might help others gain a greater understanding of a subject. There are a lot of younger gear heads out there who haven't yet discovered how important power issues are to the sounds their rigs produce.
