Wanted: Wrecked Echorec Drums for Scientific Research

Can anyone help? I’m looking for old, damaged or beaten-up Binson Echorec drums so that I can undertake a close and thorough examination of them. This will include making accurate measurements of dimensions and taking close-up photographs (possibly electron micrographs) as part of an ongoing project to create accurate engineering drawings, parts lists and document and preserve knowledge on these fabulous old delay-echo machines. My main interest is in determining the authentic construction techniques used at the Binson factory in the 1960s for winding and refacing the drum. Another useful spin-off from all this research effort is that it will aid those who wish to restore worn or damaged drums, so be assured this is all for a very good cause. An old friend of mine who runs a rental service (P.A. and vintage amps) still has 2 or 3 Echorec. When the Binson was closing, he was invited to buy a part of the discounted stock. Unfortunately, he no longer has any replacement part. I was wrong not to buy one of his second hand Echorec Echoes when they were cheap :-) But, he owns several Lombardi mixers (mid 70s / mid 80s). Now they are cheap because they are too heavy and bulky (being built like a tank), so I'm thinking of buying one and then removing the echo disc to assemble my pseudo Binson, although solid state :-) Perhaps, as a 'last chance, you could do the same but I'm not sure that the drum is exactly the same You are looking for. I have found only one video in the web: for a few seconds, you can see the drum. I apologize for being talkative and for my bad English. Best Regards. I'll try to get accurate informations but I'm forced to take my time because the modern lifestyle is quite close to a nigthmare: always on the run; and, believe me, that's the plain truth!

..." the authentic construction techniques used at the Binson factory in the 1960s for winding and refacing the drum" ...I'm not sure but, many years ago, somebody told me those drums were made by another factory (under order by Binson). Also (as You probably know) those parts were components developed for the airplanes (or, if not else, they were made with the same standards, in terms of reliability). Anyway, there were other drum echoes made in Italy (and fitted into certain mixers).

Yes, they are beautifully made. I was taking some close pictures today of the magentic drum - it's a beautiful piece of precision engineering.

Hi Phil, I'm guessing you know who the guy in Italy is that restores and constructs new version's of Echorec's? He has demo's on YouTube as well. If you don't know who I'm speaking of and need more info hit me up and I'll find it. He got NOS parts before the factory got completely cleaned out. You might be able to get what you need from him, well worn throw aways or NOS. Best, Matt

Hi Phil, I'm assuming you've hit up the guy in Italy who makes his own version's of Echorecs and restores them as well with old parts he has on hand? He might part with something you would need. If you don't know who I'm talking about hit me up and I'll dig up his info and email. He has YouTube demo's as well. Cheers, Matt
