Blackbird Vacuum Tube Preamp

$629.00 – $999.00

The real McCoy! The SR-71 Blackbird™ “Tube Tone Engine” is a full-featured vacuum tube preamp, in a pedal. Designed for tone & versatility, the  SR-71 will add clean/drive/distortion channels to vintage/boutique guitar amps, or work as a stand-alone direct recording tube preamplifier. The clean channel possesses a beautifully pure, “glassy” character, and the drive channel is tuned to deliver a rich, full-bodied, devastatingly smooth overdrive.

“If distortion can be described as ‘beautiful’, this is it.” — The ToneQuest Report

Description

The Blackbird™ “Tube Tone Engine” is an all-tube preamp in a pedal—the genuine article! This versatile tone machine gives guitarists access to a wide palette of rich, burnished guitar sounds. Whether recording direct to computer in the studio, or with a tube amp in a live situation, this pedal delivers—big-time! The tone of the drive channel is like “Bourbon & Honey”—the overdrive is rich, full-bodied and warm. And the clean channel is as smooth as glass, which adds a pleasing lift to the guitar tone.

The Gain Channel

The gain channel is all-tube, based on the same type of high voltage, vacuum tube clipping circuitry found in custom, top-of-the-range, tube amps. Winding up the gain knob gradually fattens up the sound until it becomes a sweet, bluesy overdrive, full of richness and even harmonic overtones. Not only that, this channel features a second, entirely different voicing (“CREAMY”), where the tubes are “hot” biased. Hot biasing introduces more harmonic content to thicken up the soup. Dig-in with the guitar pick and the Blackbird responds musically, working with you, to create soaring, expressive solos. Ease-off, and the Blackbird’s natural tube compression ensures you’ll effortlessly transition right back into rhythm or chord playing. All the right sounds are there: classic rock, crunch and devastating  harmonically-saturated guitar sounds.

The Clean Channel

The clean channel is pure, glassy and sweet and lends itself to country and jazz playing. This channel is a replica of the Fender® “Blackface” tube circuit, and like the Blackface circuit, it responds well to high-output pickups and boost pedals. Give it a push and it will break-up nicely; then push it a little harder, and you have classic 1970s overdrive. The tone and feel of the pedal is beautifully balanced—it doesn’t get any better than this. The clean channel is perfection; the last word in depth and clarity—that polished, classy sound that tubes excel at.

Tailoring The Tone

Get under the hood and “tweak” the Blackbird to find your own unique signature sound. The Blackbird’s overdrive response can be altered by adjusting tube bias points and swapping out tubes. This gives guitarists access to a virtually unlimited range of classic and customised amp voicings.

Biasing

The internal “BIAS” trim-pot affects the biasing of the third tube gain stage in the 4-stage clipping circuitry. Biasing affects the sensitivity, biting point and “feel”of the drive channel. Rotating the trim-pot clockwise increases bias voltage, “hot” biasing the tube stage and rotating anti-clockwise “cold” biases the tube. Note: Bias adjustments only affect “CREAMY” voicing of the Blackbird’s drive channel.

Tube Swapping

Swap out tubes to change the character of the drive channel.  Substitute the stock 12AX7 with another B9A type, such as a 5751, 12AY7 or 12AU7, to alter the Blackbird’s tone, sensitivity, biting-point and gain. The Blackbird is designed to allow easy access to the tubes for this purpose—so feel free to experiment. In less time than it takes to change a light bulb, you can swap out a tube for another type, or even a NOS (new old stock) brand.

It’s a tone hound’s dream—discovering bargain vintage Mullard, Sylvania, RCA tubes, and then using them to tailor your tone to your tastes. From subtle break-up, to mellow blues and vintage or saturated modern rock distortion, the Blackbird does it all. And the best thing is: it’s sound is authentic—real tube tone—there’s nothing like it.

Bassists! Yes, that’s you. The Blackbird is great for electric bass—better than most so-called “bass-friendly” pedals. Its input stage possesses excellent low-end response and it effortlessly handles higher output levels from bass guitar. We recommend ordering a Blackbird with lower gain 12AY7 or 5751 tubes installed. Just give Sam a call to find out about availability.

Named after the coolest plane ever built: The SR-71 Blackbird with a top speed of Mach3+ and the ability to outrun surface-to-air missiles. Like it’s counterpart, the Blackbird “Tube Tone Engine” puts you in full control of your core drive sound.

FEATURES

  • Two Channels: The Blackbird’s clean channel is identical to Leo Fender’s “Blackface” circuit. The overdrive channel is a “hot-rodded” 4-stage tube clipping circuit—think “Dumble”, but with more mojo!
  • Classic Tone Stacks: Dedicated “BASS”, “MIDDLE” and “TREBLE” controls for each channel—the same passive tonestacks as in Fender’s “Blackface” amps.
  • Tube Buffered Output: Connects to the input of a guitar amplifier. This output is buffered by a low impedance tube cathode follower stage with up to +10dBu of gain. Low impedance ensures zero tone loss when driving long cable runs.
  • Transformer Balanced Out: Professional 600Ω balanced output for direct recording. Connects to mixing desk, PC sound capture card or power amplifier.  Adds +6dBu gain.
  • All Tube: The Blackbird is an entire vacuum tube preamp in a pedal. The signal path is 100% analogue and the tubes operate at real amp plate voltages. Further, D.C. powered tube heaters ensure lowest possible noise.
  • Audiophile Components: Absolutely no skimping on component quality. The Blackbird’s audio signal path uses polyester capacitors and instrumentation grade metal-film resistors throughout.
  • Compact: The Blackbird is small enough to fit in a gig bag with your cables, tuner and other tools of the trade. And, it makes a great backup as a spare rig—don’t leave home, or be at home, without one!
  • Tough: The electronics are housed in a tough, powder-coated aluminium alloy enclosure with a stoved epoxy silkscreen. Built for the road and to withstand the most punishing touring schedule.
  • True Bypass Switching: Effectrode’s unique “anti-pop” footswitching circuitry utilises a sealed, gold-contact audio relay, rather than a clunky mechanical footswitch.
  • “Dakaware” Knobs: Authentic Bakelite Dakaware Chicago 1510 knobs custom made in the U.S.A.
  • Includes 12VDC 1.5A Wall-Wart: High quality low-noise switched mode power supply operating from 100-240VAC mains input. Supplied with various adapter plugs to facilitate connection to mains outlets in other countries. Compatible with all Effectrode pedals.

My specific Blackbird unfortunately had a tube socket that wasn’t fully soldered down. It was functioning until I tried to remove the tube and realized that it was very easily broken. I managed to solder it back into connected status, and the unit works fine now. The sound of it is fantastic, though, and I love it dearly. It truly saves a lot of money when compared to a full tube amp. I just connect it to my surround sound receiver and enjoy those strings.

Another enthusiastic bassist. The EQ is subttle but very efficient (even for bass). The clean channel is great out of the box. The default setting of the blue and the red channel is optimized for guitars, but I was able to find exactly the sounds I was looking for with some tube swapping, and adjustment of the bias trim-pot and the level trim-pot. I now have the 3 sounds I need:
    – The green channel for an always-on clean and warm tube sound
    – The bleu channel “at the edge of breakup” (responds to the playing dynamics)
    – The red channel for heroic distortion

That is good to know – that bassists are discovering great tones using the Blackbird tube preamp. Thanks for taking the time to leave positive feedback. All the best, Phil

I’m sure you have no shortage of testimonials, but I just wanted to say my Blackbird arrived yesterday and it has really surpassed my expectations. I got it mainly with a view to big lead sounds – which it delivers marvellously – but where it really comes into its own is on the clean channel. Beautiful subtle textures that are a joy – and I’m sure will remain a joy for many years to come.

Thanks again and keep up the good work.

About 10 years ago, I had bought a Fulltone Tube Tape Echo just for the sake of the tube preamp section cause no other pedal gave that warmth, subtle breakup and natural boost. Then I sold it and eversince I was looking to reproduce that tone with various pedals and amps… But no results. Never had that feeling until I received my Effectrode Blackbird Vacuum Tube Preamp. Not only I found the same tone but much better in overall feeling and dynamics. Whether you go directly to your tube amp or through a CabSim to PA/FOH, this black box is just perfect! I highly recommend this product to any serious player and tone chaser…

As an owner of the Mercury fuzz, Fire bottle and Blackbird (I received it yesterday) I wanted to say thank you as since I have added your products to my rig, playing guitar has become a completely different experience.

The Blackbird is incredible and has completely exceeded my expectations, what a great piece of audio engineering art. Sometimes I am amazed and cannot believe that these beautiful sounds are coming from my amp, as they remind me of the tone of some of my favorite records.

The Blackbird is a huge problem solver. First and foremost, the tone is immaculate. The flexibility in sound-shaping is a godsend with there being two channels, drive character options, 3-band EQ, tube biasing, an extra TRS balanced output, etc. The first time I played the Blackbird live via DI I was immediately impressed at the sound quality. The bonus is that it is simple to use and it sounds fantastic. The Blackbird has to be one of the best pedals that I have ever purchased!

Michael Foisy - Washington State 24th September 2018

I have an SR-71 that is my always on pedal for my bass guitar rig. I’ve been reading your articles, specifically the one on how to optimize that pedal. WOW! I bought the three different JJ tubes and installed them per your instructions. It is incredible the difference. For bass the drive channel was a bit much especially since I wanted that YYZ Geddy Lee drive sound. HOLY COW!! This pedal with my Jazz Bass nails that sound. I love the way that second channel is now a nicely controlled drive to distortion and thoroughly usable for bass. I just wanted to let you and anyone who reads this an SR-71 is the perfect bass preamp. When placed in front of a Bergantino B|Amp there is nothing that can touch it. Thank you and I love your articles on history too. The Mullard one is epic. Take care and go Beaves!

  9. Paul Monas - Germany 4th January 2018

Hi guys, I just wanted to give you some feedback on my Blackbird, Wonderful preamp! My close friend David DeVito acquired one and I’ve decided that it’s an irreplaceable part of my live rig. The best tone I’ve ever experienced – thank you Effectrode!!

  10. David Burns - Australia 3rd January 2018

My name’s David, I’m from Australia and I bought a Blackbird from you guys not too long ago. The pedal’s great! Really love the authentic tube sound and responsive breakup, it’s a step beyond any other overdrive pedal on the market. Personally I use mine when I’m going to end up running through a PA – the Blackbird paired with a CabZeus simulator sounds far better than a mic’d amp and gives the sound people way more control. Love the pedal, keep up the good work!

  11. Andy Fortune - Canada 2nd January 2018

    Hello,
I just acquired a used recent Blackbird with the Presence switch.
First of all, I don’t know why anyone would sell this phenomenal pedal—I am blown away!
Anyway, I adjusted the internal bias trimpot because it was set quite cold for 12ax7s (love the result!) and I noticed another trimpot labeled “Level”. I can’t find any information about it. What does that control, and what should the factory setting read for resistance? I want to make sure it is set properly, or at least know what it controls before I experiment.
Many thanks! Again, what a phenomenal preamp! This is the first time since I’ve been running direct that I feel like I’m playing a real tube amp again, and I’ve been using an Ethos Overdrive, which is pretty amazing already.
    Best,
    Andy

Got the Blackbird safe and sound. It is simply brilliant. I had the pleasure of playing a 1968 Fender Blackface Vibrolux Reverb for 35 years and it is astonishing how good this box sounds in comparison. Beautiful tone, beautifully built, versatile and suitable for both acoustic and electric instruments. I would recommend the Blackbird to anyone looking to find warm beautiful tube tone. Well done and keep up the great work. Please stay safe and healthy as well.

I am holed up in my apartment in Queens – which is the epicenter of the pandemic right now – so I have some time to kill. I have been making music with my analog synths and I have discovered that your blackbird and compressor pedals sound just as amazing with synths as they do with guitars. I had bought the pedals for guitar and then drifted farther and farther into modular that I sort of forgot I had them. Anyway – I was experimenting with them yesterday and it blew me away. They make the tones on my analog gear sound warmer and thicker and more musical. It’s exciting to discover, like finding a treasure. I wanted you to know that your products were really giving me joy in a dark time.

Hi, just want to say how much I love your pedals. I’ve just sold my Blackbird for £300 which has been replaced by a Strymon Iridium but am now massively regretting it and will be getting another as soon as I can. It’s not often I feel this way about pedals and am feeling like a mad man! I have a CIOKS DC-7 now and it was only the power supply that stopped me using it on my board but my CIOKS double power adapter arrived the day somebody bought it on eBay and when I did a side by side I realised the mistake I had made. I’ll be buying some more of your pedals real soon.

Just wanted to say I received my Blackbird yesterday and it’s exactly what I hoped it would be. I buy a lot of pedals that there is often some level of disappointment or expectations not quite met, however the Blackbird gave me exactly what I wanted – fuller, clearer, more 3D cleans and smooth, sparkling overdrive. I couldn’t be happier!
I run a direct rig with the Blackbird running into a Strymon Iridium and it sounds shockingly good.
Thank you for making such a wonderful unit!
    Cheers Dan

Just one word on the BlackBird: incredible.
A very, very useful tool that imparts good tone on practically anything you care to put it in front of.

It has turned my practical Roland Blues Cube, a very clever solid state machine with some good tone of its own, into a virtual tube amp.
I have already discovered two great options: The drive channel with a nice amount of gain dialled in, and using the amp’s good onboard reverb. Great blues tone. Or the clean channel into my homebrew Triangle Big Muff Pi, yielding a fantastically sustained, typically nasal “American Woman” tone.

    Magnificent.

Dear Effectrode, I have been recording music for over 25yrs, mainly using direct recording methods and therefore I have owned a myriad of pre amps both rackmount and pedal types. I have owned all the usual suspects made by all the big companies and some boutique models too and I have to say I have produced some very good results, although sometimes I have struggled to use them in conjunction with other pedals due to background noise. At times I have found this frustrating and was often tempted to turn to the all in one pedal board, however I am glad I persisted with individual pedals as I believe in terms of tone and quality this is the way to go, as I am now the proud owner of an Effectrode Blackbird, this has to be the best looking pedal known to man. I don’t care what’s on your pedal board your eye will always be drawn to this little beauty in terms of tone and the search for it. I would implore all guitarists not to buy any other preamp pedal until you have tried the Blackbird. As I have said before, I have owned alot of preamps but in my opinion the Blackbird is better than anything else and by some distance, using it directly the tone just convinces me that I am playing an amplifier not a preamp, and a few tweeks here and there creates so many different tones, I absolutely love the clean sounds and the dumbletone nails it. All this and extremely quiet too, great for stacking up other pedals, some dumble type overdrives cost as much as the Blackbird which in my mind makes it an absolute bargain. I have also plugged the Blackbird into Line 6 DT50 and the results were again outstanding, with the blackbird plugged into it I would stand my combo up against any other amp regardless of price. Thanks to Mr Taylor for taking the time to speak to me regarding my query, i can’t think of many other companies with the genius behind it all takes your call. After sales service is alive and well at Effectrode. Now for me I need a Tube Drive, then a Fire Bottle, then a Mercury Fuzz, then a Tube-Vibe and on and on and on. Many thanks Malcolm Pettitt

Thank you for creating the Blackbird.
I have been using it since received in August 2018 and am always just astounded with the performance of this pre-amp.
The Blackbird has become the centerpiece of my gear.
When I ordered the Blackbird I had zero experience with your product or knew anyone who had used it.

Quality-wise, this is easily the best electric tone ever, by far. I, too, was turned off by the disappointing tones I was getting over the years–no, decades, and only last year got a real American Strat and entry-level Fender tube amp for the first time, upgraded the tubes and speaker, and was FINALLY mostly satisfied. But with the Blackbird and LA-1A, this is an entirely unprecedented level of tone quality and absence of noise. And that’s with only a couple of NOS tubes installed, as I’m waiting on the others to arrive. Hat’s off to you, mate! Well, well done!!!

Have been playing with the Blackbird for a day. What a remarkable little box of tricks. When I think that over the years, I’ve wasted a ton of cash on hardware and software and have never been happy with any of it. The Blackbird has finally scratched a lingering itch that I had believed to be un-scratchable. A very high table will be reserved for you in Valhalla!

I got you, I finally figured it out late at night last night. Problem was I mainly use the clean Channel. I eventually got to the gain channel, which really changed my mind as far as overdrive goes, I can tell you that. I’ve been so against overdrive before I’ve opted to buy clean two- rock style amplifiers so as to  completely avoid overdrive circuits, but hearing the overdrive in this thing, man  , it’s very nice. I really like it. I’m extremely grateful for the sacrifice you’ve made, however many years of your life it took for you to come up with this thing. And a HUGE thank you to the whole Effectrode team.

Thanks so much for getting back to me so quickly. I adjusted the jumper because the Blackbird is definitely an “always on” pedal! While I was there, I also adjusted the level trimmer and bias to my taste. I’m using 12AX7, 5751, 12AU7 and the whole thing is just absolutely perfect.

The Blackbird sounds great in front of all my tube amps, but it really shows its value in front of my Quilter solid state amps. The Quilters are incredible amps, but they lack the touch responsiveness and chimey/glassy thing that I love and now with the Blackbird, it’s just amazing. I can’t imagine playing my Quilters without the Blackbird anymore!

I’m sold on your pedals. I’m going to get PC-2A compressor, Fire Bottle Boost, and in all likelihood, the Mercury Fuzz also. The real problem now is space on the pedal board. 🙂

Thank you Phil for making such amazing products!! to pair with my Blackbird. Thanks for making great products!

I purchased the last stock from The Tone Pro Shop in Australia. I am absolutely in love with this pedal!! I’m playing it through a ’77 1987 Marshall and it just killlllllssssss ittttt!!!!! (I even go as far to say that the Pre-emphasis switch in the upright position actually does a better job of a JCM800 than my JCM800 2204 head.)

  27. Joe Caruso - U.S.A. 1st October 2012

Wow! I have just spent 5 hours going through the motions with the B.B. And can now truly say that the BlackBird was well worth the wait! It is every bit as good as I had imagined that it would be 🙂 Kudos, on this Masterpiece…

  28. Scott Rabinowitz - U.S.A. 1st November 2012

Let me start by saying I rarely buy musical equipment prior to having some kind of experience with it. Saying this, here goes my impressions of the pedal. The green channel has tons of headroom and stays nice and clean unless you really crank the volume knob. When I first looked at the pedal I was curious why there wasn’t a gain knob dedicated to that channel but quickly got past that when I put a 1985 Whiteface Rat pedal in front of it and other overdrive/distortion pedals as well. It takes these pedals extremely well. The creamy channel is just that, nice for blues and fusion. Played along with Jeff Beck’s Wired album and nailed the tone on “Blue Wind”. Great stuff. The classic channel really surprised me with the amount of gain to be had. Not sure why, but I wasn’t expecting this. I can cover lots of ground with this channel from 70’s to modern rock tones. The eq is great on all channels. The Blackbird is very touch sensitive and dynamic, responding to my guitar’s volume knob and playing. I have no preference to single coils vs. humbuckers with the Blackbird it’s very sweet sounding with both. I am looking forward to swapping out tubes to see what else I can get out of this. Thanks for a terrific product.

  29. Elías Vicente - Spain 1st December 2012

I´m very happy with my new pedal (Blackbird). It´s as versatile as you told me in one of the emails you sent me. This is my second Effectrode pedal (the other is a Delta-Trem) so I can only say that you make great products. When I connect the Blackbird to my transistor amp the sound comes to life. I´m rediscovering the overdrive (and clean) sounds with it. Fantastic pedal – congratulations Phil.

  30. Glenn Webster (Fraid Knot) - Great Britain 1st December 2012

Hey Phil – I’m absolutely in LOVE with the new pedals. I am seriously considering duplicating my last order so I leave them in my studio for
strictly recording purposes. The BB and the comp are amazing. Thanks again for making such incredible stuff my friend. It’s such a pleasure to use. Cheers, Glenn

  31. Vince Grattan - U.S.A. 1st December 2012

I’m not sure what kind of space alien technology went into this but its truly amazing, and is quite an advance over the Tube Drive – which is in itself a marvelous pedal. I cannot believe how versatile it is. I almost feel like I should have to pass an audition just to be worthy of owning one like a Dumble amp or something. It’s pretty awesome.

  32. Jim Baldwin 1st December 2012

I love the pedal – I have been playing it through a RetroKing 18 Watt combo with 2 x 12″ speakers – it sounds fantastic.

  33. Todd Girgulis - Canada 1st December 2012

Hello Sam! I hope you had a wonderful Christmas & all the best in the new year! Just wanted to say I LOVE the Blackbird! It far exceeds my expectations. I had a Ethos and the Blackbird surpasses it in EVERY way! Please pass along my appreciation to Phil for making such an awesome pedal! Would you please put me on the wait list for the Helios Tube Fuzz? Any idea when it will be out?

  34. Colin Gentile - France 1st January 2013

The more I play with the Blackbird, the more I am impressed with it. I’ve had many overdrives – Landgraff Dynamic Overdrive, Tanabe Dum & Zen Twin Custom, Bogner Blue, Colorsound Overdriver, D*A*M/Sola Sound Tone Bender, Dirty Boy Germanium Boy, Dirty Boy Ball Buster, Skreddy Screwdriver, G2D Creamdrive, Chandler Limited Germanium Drive, Keeley TS-9 Tubescreamer, Ethos, Providence Stampede Overdrive, Spaceman Aphelion, Stephenson Stage Hog etc. I can honestly say the Blackbird absolutely blows away all of them!

The Blackbird’s Clean channel is the best Blackface channel I’ve ever heard – and I’ve had a ’70 Silverface Deluxe Reverb that was professionally Blackfaced. People rave about the Ethos’ clean channel; it doesn’t hold a candle to the Blackbird. The Blackbird’s Overdrive channel is the most organic, adjustable overdrive channel ever! And with the adjustable bias & tube swapping, there is no limit to dialling in great tone! I’m also very impressed with the warmth of the tone. I’m not sure if it’s due to the tubes, but the Blackbird has a unique warmth to the tone that I’ve never experienced in a pedal before. All the other pedals sounded dead and sterile in comparison.

I am so impressed with the Blackbird that my plan is to have only Effectrode pedals on my board. To that end, I’ll be ordering an Atomic Power Supply and the PC-2A Compressor this week. Please also put me down for the Helios Fuzz, Delta-Trem Tremolo and the Echo-Delay when they’re available.

Thanks for building such AWESOME pedals!

    Very best regards,

    Todd Girgulis – Canada – January 2012

I’m Colin, I work at the shop ‘La Pedale’ (in Paris) and I tested the Blackbird preamp on my bass… it’s really great! I was searching for this type of sound for recording, and you made it!

I’m really excited about your new pedal (Blackbird)! I have set my old boost and distortion pedals and the new Blackbird pedal in one line between the guitar and the amp. The different combinations of these pedals and the 2 channels of the Blackbird offer a whole new range of fantastic tones from clean to very distorted; sounds that I wished to play, but did not know how to get them before.

  37. John Verity - Great Britain 1st January 2013

I’ve tried the Blackbird with my rig and it sounds absolutely killer – I honestly can’t remember being this impressed with a piece of new kit. Thank you so much. I have my amps set quite hot, so kicking in the ‘Clean’ channel on the pedal really does give it some serious welly. The ‘Drive’ channel really kicks my amps into overdrive – it’s just fabulous!

  38. Matthew Cocksedge 1st January 2013

I’ve just been enjoying the Blackbird – this pedal is fantastic. The band I play in have been gigging (including an outdoor festival in Vienna at -10 degrees!) and the Blackbird has held up to everything I’ve thrown at it, and has really come in to its own when I’ve been playing through other peoples backline – having it really enables me to get a great tone out of virtually any amp. I’ve been putting my Analogman King of Tone pedal in front of the Blackbird to drive the clean channel just a little, and the results are, to be honest with you, utterly gobsmacking. The presence of the Blackbird, the Blackface tone and drive are incredible. Switching over to the Classic drive channel is a joy every time – hearing those tubes go in to overdrive is insane, and the tone that comes out of the amp is second to none. Just so you know, I play a 335 with P90s in to a Hiwatt SSmk2 amp. I haven’t used the Blackbird in the studio yet, but I’m really looking forward to it. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you for designing the pedal and doing such a great job – I previously had a solid-state preamp, and the Blackbird just blows it away, the feel and response and the general tone is fantastic. If I manage to record anything in the studio I’ll certainly let you know. This was my first Effectrode purchase but I’m already planning the next one! Thanks again, all the best, Matt

  39. Olivier Arbona - France 1st February 2013

I thank you for the modification of my pre-amplifier Blackbird – I love it very much. The clean and dirty tones work magnificently well with my Gretsch passive basses. You still have to realize some excellent work (as usual). I am already languishing to have the new versions of the Delta-trem and the Vibralux.

  40. Attila Kis 1st February 2013

I’m really, really happy with my Blackbird. Since I’ve got it no other drive pedal is good for me 🙂 Actually, I was able to sell a bunch of them, so I could recuperate more $ that I spent on the Blackbird!

  41. Michel - France 1st March 2013

Phil, you’re just amazing! Your effects are awesome, they sing so good! I have the Blackbird and the Tube-Vibe (first generation) and it’s a great pleasure to play with them, each time and more in more. I’m waiting your delay with eagerness. Have a great day.

  42. Mike L. - U.S.A. 1st March 2013

I was able to purchase a mint condition used Blackbird (Serial# 014) from someone. (I had to drive 300 miles round trip to get it on a Sunday night, but it was worth it!) This pedal sounds amazing!!!! Thanks to everyone at Effectrode for building this.

  43. John Verity - Great Britain 1st August 2013

The Blackbird blue channel sounds absolutely brilliant – you should be very chuffed old chap!! You’ve really nailed it with this one – timeless.

  44. Steven Scharf - U.S.A. 1st August 2013

Hi Samantha, the Blackbird arrived QUICKLY today and sounds amazing. The build quality, feel and sound were well worth the wait. Thank you.

  45. Tristan Klien - France 1st August 2013

Just got the Blackbird today and I made a video. Since my partner in crime Two notes released their fantastic torpedo CAB, I’ve been trying everything looking like a preamp, bogner blue & red, tech 21, suhr, and finally wampler but they just made overdrive pedals. not real preamps, and your SR-71 does a fantastic job. clarity, density, gain, touch, color, texture…it wins on all those points.

  46. Chesley Chen - U.S.A. 1st May 2013

I have just received the Blackbird. It arrived promptly and securely. I tested it out and it sounds fantastic. The clean channel enhanced everything that I had. Fingerpicking articulation to expansive open chords – all sounded so much richer and the overdriven channel with the classic and creamy switch gave my set up so many more possibilities than I had ever imagined – Vox, Marshall, black-faced Fender, even Mesa. And because it’s tube driven, the decay was natural. What an amazing piece of work.

  47. Ry Jarred - U.S.A. 1st August 2013

I’ve received the Blackbird Pedal… It sounds fantastic! Thank You, Ry

  48. Christopher Daniel - U.S.A. 1st August 2013

I have just returned home from work to find my package of Blackbirds waiting. I have been tracking them everyday. Just opened them up even though it’s 12:30am I could wait. I love them! The new design is cool and I like the retro look. I’ll probably demo them as soon as my household wakes up. I think I am your biggest fan. I am sold on your products and quality of craftsmanship, thank you for dedication & sharing your passion. I look forward to expanding my personal collection to include more of your work. Thanks again, Christopher

  49. Chesley Chen - U.S.A. 1st August 2013

After trying out the Blackbird for two weeks, I have to say that I can no longer view this simply as a glorified stompbox or even a pre-amp. On a small class A amp with a simple tone knob, the Blackbird opens up the sound without the noise and cut problems that come with adding a graphic eq. The Blackbird can transform a small amp into something more sonically diverse and still maintain the levels of a small amp. On a larger amp, the Blackbird enhanced the harmonics. The clean channel can respond to the articulation of fingerpicking without sustained notes muddying the phrasing. The overdrive channel can bring the large amp to just a slight breakup, pending on how hard one strikes the strings, to a rounded, sustained gain. The Blackbird even made a clean solid state amp sound reasonable when overdriven. Finally, one of the greatest part of the Blackbird is that it is stackable. On either the clean or the overdriven, this ebony device made all of my other gain related pedals sound so much better. Germanium pedals sound richer, tube screamer type actually do a better job of emulating a tube amp with the Blackbird in chain – they all sound great. Even the Tube Drive sound fuller. I thought I was going to have to get rid of my overdrive and distortion pedals, but instead I now have an even greater tonal palette to choose from. I’ll be scoring a film into the computer direct next. If it works as well as all the previous applications, it will save studio time and money. Thank you, Chesley

  50. Jorge Roserio - Puerto Rico 1st August 2013

WOW… this sounds great, the clean channel is what I’ve been looking for. I’m using a 5150 and an fx loop switcher. In one loop I have de 5150’s preamp and on the other the Blackbird. I have the awesome distortion of the 5150 and the shiny Fender clean… my dream amp. Thanks Phil.

  51. Tristan Klien - France 1st August 2013

The problem with Blackbird is that everytime I plug my guitar in it I get ideas and I have to record something!!!!

  52. Fabian 1st August 2013

The clean is beyond anything I’ve heard anywhere – amazing – completely blown away.

  53. Mike Tierney - U.S.A. 1st August 2013

Just wanted to thank you for everything getting my order done. The Blackbird arrived safely and already this thing seems like a permanent fixture in my setup. It’s completely natural sounding and one of the few items probably capable of adjusting with any amp. I am just using a Swart AST combo which has great cleans or light breakup but due to the very Tweedy sound it doesn’t like all pedals (drive types). The Blackbird melds very well to the amp as drive or I can use it last to run pedals into Blackbird treating the Blackbird more like amp at end if chain for a very nice Fender Blackface/Dumble foundation tone. I think the pedals I already use benefit from tone shaping from the Blackbird very much and I was really looking at this as two channels but the two gain modes classic and creamy are like three. Wait until tube swapping! Thanks again

  54. Daniel Gueorguiev 1st August 2013

I use my Blackbird into the FX Loop with more than excellent results, it’s absolutely magnificent. Thank you so much again for your help and great customer service!

  55. Fabricio de Monaco - Brazil 1st October 2013

Hey guys, Just to say that Blackbird is simply awesome! I have now two new great amps at my feet! Congrats from Brazil! Keep up the amazing work!

  56. Raphael Bottura 1st November 2013

Blackbird preamp is sensational, makes my fretless piccolo bass sound enourmous! Worth every cent, congratulations.

  57. Todd Mondragon - Isle of White 1st November 2013

I just wanted to let you know what a tremendous pedal (Blackbird) you’ve created here, it’s completely replaced my tone rack consisting of a Soldano X88R and a Bogner Fish into a VHT 2502. In fact I’ve already sold the X88R and the other two are going out the door this month as well, using the Blackbird and Fire Bottle into my Fender twin set up for as nice a clean as I can get basically does everything the rack rig did and in a package small enough for me to travel pretty much anywhere with as long as I use a good quality clean amp when I get there. Amazing! I didn’t think it could be done but there it is!

  58. Gene Ng 1st November 2013

I own you Blackbird and Tube-Vibe. Wow, please keep up your AMAZING work. Tube based effects are one level above everything else. I’m still so surprised people don’t talk about them as much.

  59. James Kerrigan - U.S.A. 1st November 2013

I have been loving the various pedals you have created that I have purchased from your web site over the last few months. The Tube-Vibe was a ‘gate way drug’ pedal which has led to the Blackbird, Tube Drive and PC-2A. I’m a big fan of the incredible sounds they create and the quality of construction.

  60. Jay Wilson 1st December 2013

Love my Blackbird by the way. To be totally honest, I have, on more than one occasion, played on that sweet clean channel so long that I actually FELL ASLEEP while playing. Not even exaggerating.

  61. Richard Latimer - U.S.A. 1st December 2013

I received my SR-71 Blackbird first thing today and all I can say is… Fantastic… Beautiful… Supersonic! Please put me on the list for the Vibralux when available.

  62. Johnathan Coggins 1st December 2013

I recently purchased the Blackbird and it is the best pedal I have ever bought. It sounds fantastic. Thanks so much for your time and a great, great product.

  63. Matthew Engelbrecht - New South Wales 1st December 2013

Absolutely loving the sound of both the Blackbird and the Tube Drive… brilliant! Very excited about getting them laid out in a new board I’m putting together. More importantly they both sound ridiculously good and the variety of tones I’ve been getting running into the Vox and Orange here has been simply awesome. Thank you mate.

  64. Mike Cronis 1st December 2013

Firstly, a fantastic product. I recently acquired one of your Blackbird preamp pedals from an undeserving seller who apparently was not worthy enough to keep it himself. I’d like to point-out I’ll never sell #218. I love it, and the audiophile quality is superb. I’m working on an album and I’ll give your pedal proper kudos. I read the manual and I’m quite interested in the “weight” of the pedal being 2 pounds on Earth, and 2 x 10^9 pounds on a neutron star, effectively a black-hole. I’m both amused and concerned, and had a good laugh. Hopefully I won’t create a singularity with my Roland Dimension D in conjunction with the Blackbird, or worse still, my Roland SV-330 reverb rack-unit, of which I use my most favorite setting “Galactic Space Echo”.

  65. Joe Corrales - U.S.A. 1st February 2014

Killer tube preamp from Effectrode Audiophile Pedals. I’ve never heard anything like it. Whisper quiet too. I’m never leaving the house again.

  66. Jeff Whitcher - U.S.A. 1st February 2014

I am seriously blown away by your gear. I have the PC-2A compressor and last week received my SR-71 Blackbird. Your products are built like tanks and sound like warm butter flowing over a stack of tube pancakes – just delicious.

  67. Douglas Robertson - Alaska 1st February 2014

I spent the day showing off my two Blackbird pedals at a friend’s studio. Everyone was mighty impressed! I’d already shown them my Tube Drive, PC-2A, and Fire Bottle, but everyone felt the Blackbirds were even more versatile and impressive. It can be tricky holding on to your pedals, Phil! I get more trade offers for my Effectrode pedals than any other pieces of gear I own! Thanks for everything!

  68. Marc Walters - Great Britain 1st March 2014

Must say your effects are inspiring to play through and obviously of the highest quality. Keep up the great work and look forward to the development of your ideas.

  69. Jon Wright - Great Britain 1st March 2014

Just a quick note to say I got my Blackbird – fantastic. Using cab simulation I’m getting a whole world of authentic album quality tones recorded direct to computer. The clean channel is beautiful (and takes pedals really nicely), the blue and red channels cover a MASSIVE range of characters – it’s just a fantastic way of recording. Great shout on using the jumper to swap the switch functions around! Fantastic idea and in use here.

  70. Bob Payne - U.S.A. 1st March 2014

Wow! Man, GREAT Pedal! AWESOME Tones! (I might even have to sell off my pedal collection!)

  71. Steve Clitherow - England 1st April 2014

Just received my SR-71 and PC-2A… I am incredibly pleased with both pedals and they have brought my whole sound so much more alive. Now looking forward to the next batch of Helios. Thanks again, Steve

  72. Michiel Niessen - Belgium 1st April 2014

I had a thorough hands-on with the Blackbird this past weekend: David brought his along to our weekend’s rehearsal-slash-jam session. It is a very capable and characteristic machine, and I ‘get’ the concept and idea of the Blackbird finally. I was amazed at how the ‘Phil-sound’ is instantly recognisable: the tone is dimensional, alive, natural and exactly unpredictable enough to never tire of it. Plus, it is so practical: one could take it on a tour and place it in front of almost any amp, and be confident about finding the right tone. Basically, the Blackbird frees the player from amp-dependency.

  73. Duncan Farquhar - Great Britain 1st April 2014

Thank you for designing this great pre-amp, after many years playing acoustically or through SS practice amps it is wonderful to experience the valve tone again with easily portable/storable gear.

  74. Brian Hundy 1st May 2014

Awesome, thanks so much and please tell Phil that his Blackbird is one awesome pedal 🙂 You guys create amazing products, so thanks to all of you that make it happen!

  75. Bill Hitefield - U.S.A. 1st May 2014

Even before I solved my preamp dilemma I had fallen pretty hard for the 2902. I have tried to go back and spend some quality time with my other amps but the thrill ain’t there. That with a cobbled together system where I was getting most of my preamplification from a combination of Xotic RC Boost pedal and rack compressor. After my usual masochistic research process, and ruling out GP3 even if I could find one, in favor of a pedal board based solution I have finally got it. Just took delivery on an Effectrode Blackbird. So I just want to share my initial impressions.

In a word: WOW. These two pieces are like long lost siblings. I haven’t even begun to do any tube swapping. Just some Groove Tubes 12AX7s it came with. What I was getting before was a vague facsimile of what this power amp should sound like. Anybody who knows the RC boost knows that the EQing is pretty strong. I always like to give a bass boost for more body. This Blackbird’s EQ is fantastic. Apparently modelled on a Blackface tone stack. It sounds friggin beautiful. Tons of body and presence and so ‘hi-fi’ it’s, well, music to my ears. The wife was going to stomp out in a major huff if I didn’t finally stop playing. Maybe it was the volume? I’m not even a high gain kind of guy but the gain channel on this is so dynamic I couldn’t stop trying it out. Dial in a nice thick crunch and with just a little roll back on the guitar volume it would tame right down.

I have a whole pile of great NOS tubes I want to try in this thing but I couldn’t stop long enough to even try any at first. Just having too much fun. The cleans are with out a doubt the most beautiful I have ever heard. And I love clean. Extremely revealing. Every single nuance of what I do is startlingly presented. No room for sloppy playing here. I do believe that this is an example of the total being greater than the sum of the parts. This combination is heaven for me. So, to answer my own question. Jazz and country tones from the 2902? Oh hell yeah! The whole gamut and then some. Can’t wait to see what an old Telefunken 5965 will sound like in V1!

Can’t leave without saying thank you. Inspiration is always a good thing!

    Tom Rollison – August 2014

The Blackbird arrived yesterday and it is magnificent, not only in terms of sound but also in the build quality and appearance. What a great shipping service, less than a week from the UK to Australia. Thanks to all involved in the manufacture and supply of the pedal,

Chris Della Bosca – Australia – July 2014

I am the primary guitar player in our worship band at our church. I have a late 70s Gibson SG custom and a late 70s Gibson Les Paul custom. Both are left-handed and both were purchased new. My primary amps are a Mesa Mark IV (revision B) 1×12 combo and a Mesa Nomad 45 1×12 combo. Even with my playing, the guitars sound good through either amp.

Both Mesas are excellent amps. The only problem is that as I have been getting older (I will hit 60 my next birthday) and I have noticed that these amps have been putting on some serious weight. It has been more and more difficult to haul them back and forth to church. I began to look for something with a smaller footprint. As such, my search began to focus on tube preamp pedals. After much research, I narrowed down my search to the following:

    1. The Kingsley Minstrel (even though it is not a true preamp).
    2. The Tonebone Plexitube pedal.
    3. The Mesa V-Twin.
    4. The AMT SS-11a.
    5. The Effectrode Blackbird.

I really liked the sound that the thick sound that the Minstrel produced. It reminded me of my Nomad. But I had to eliminate it because I wanted a true preamp (my son and I plan to do some recording). The same was true with the Plexitube. Nice pedal, but not a preamp. The Mesa V-Twin did not stay in the running long. While it sounds good, it came too close to the Nomad and Mark IV. That left the AMT SS-11a and the Blackbird. On paper, both seemed to do what I wanted them to do. The only “on paper” advantage that the AMT had was that it had an effects loop. But, I heard that there were volume drop issues with the loop – and that “advantage” was negated. On the Blackbird side, I had read multiple reviews where the reviewer was disappointed at the simulated output. They found that they needed to feed the Blackbird into some sort of cabinet emulator (like a Torpedo or an H&K RedBox) to get the most out of it. Given the price of the Blackbird, I was kind of bummed that I would need to purchase another pedal to go with it.

While I still trying to make up my mind, I ran across a used AMT SS-11a and a used SS-11b on the website of the Musician’s Friend triumvirate. The SS-11b (the modern voice) was a good bit cheaper (and in my price range – I had been saving my birthday and Christmas gift monies). I called and asked if they would price-match the SS-11a (the classic voice) to that price. They were not even willing to discuss it. Not long after that, I reluctantly began thinking about lowering my standards (to match my budget) and started looking at Electro-Harmonix boxes and such. In the middle of that, I ran across a used Blackbird (serial number 193) on Reverb.com. The seller mentioned that it was one of the newer Blackbirds – one where the “cab” issue was resolved. The price was good (as in, it was in my budget), we went back and forth a few times, and he came down some more. So, I eagerly jumped on it. It came in a few days later. It was in excellent condition. I was able to play with it when I got off of work. Let me say right away that I love this preamp.

What I like/love about my Blackbird:

    1. The tones are not the exact tones that I get out of my Mesas. They complement the tone from them. (In other words, they are close, but different in ways that make them mix together very nicely in my recordings). The EQ ranges are slightly different, so I can dial in a “mids-hump” on both, and neither walks on the other in the mix. That is EXACTLY one of the things I was looking for in my preamp. I did not need to match my Mesa’s tone. Both of them have direct out, so I can easily record their tone. I wanted something that sounded great on its own, but yet fit in nicely with my existing amps. The Blackbird is an awesome match!
    2. I like both overdrive channels. I like being able to pick between even and odd harmonics. Very nice touch in the design of this pedal. The red channel has way more gain than I will ever use, but the Blackbird allows me to get exactly what I need from it. PS: Very nice sustain on the red channel. I can let notes ring out without having to use “finger vibrato” to stretch the sustain.
    3. I like the idea of being able to configure the pedal to “foot-switch” between classic and creamy. This makes the pedal user friendly. I have not made the change yet, but I do think I am going to do it. I am just waiting to see if I am ever going to need the “bypass” capability via the footswitch (and not the toggle switch).
    4. I really like the upgrade that you did for the balanced output. I run my Blackbird directly into the PA system at church and it sounds fantastic. And, the Blackbird sounds fantastic through my Bose headphones! Great for practicing at night.
    5. I like how easy it is to swap out preamp tubes. Mine came with a JJ in the middle slot. I swapped it out for a Tung Sol ECC83 and like what it did.
    6. Did I mention that it is lighter than either of my Mesas? J
    7. Which neutron star did you visit when you weighed the Blackbird? (I almost spit my coffee when I read it – I was laughing so hard!)

As a side note, I do not actually use my Blackbird as a “foot” pedal. I keep it on top of a combo amp and work it with my hands. (I know, I know. I’m kind of weird anyway). In summary, I am well pleased with my Blackbird. While the honeymoon may be over, I plan on keeping it for the long time.

  82. Patrick Guitton 1st November 2014

My Blackbird is at last at home now; this little “sugar box” sound really great also with bass!

  83. Jon Wright (John Wright Guitar Sessions) - Great Britain 1st December 2014

I flippin’ love that preamp [Blackbird], it’s a thing of beauty!

  84. Greg Smith - U.S.A. 1st February 2015

The Blackbird was exactly what I was looking for and quite a bit more. Thanks for making an amazing pedal, Phil! Biggest surprise was the EQ… incredible tonal range! Can’t wait to use it for the first time at the band’s gig on Sunday!

  85. Charlie Shapiro (Tone Tubby Inc.) - U.S.A. 1st March 2015

Your products have become the center of my pedal and tone board! The Blackbird sounds great. I will continue to recommend your pedals to my clients. Let me know when the buffer is out and ready.

  86. Alan Evans - Great Britain 1st March 2015

Just wanted to let you know how blown away with my new Blackbird. Amazing pedal. I’m in the process of selling all the others I had, the tone I had in my head was in that pedal. So cool. Simplified my board to the BB and TD now.

  87. Robert Wood - U.S.A. 1st March 2015

So many times, in these comments, the SR-71 Blackbird has been compared to pixie dust and magic sauce. I purchased mine recently with the stock 12AX7 tubes. I placed it in front of a solid-state Fender amp of mine on the clean channel, pulled out the Telecaster, and flipped to the Dimarzio Area-Hot-T bridge pickup. Wow! I had never heard this pickup and amp “growl” before. With the Blackbird “in”, I could definitely verify more note clarity, more depth, more sparkle! It just sounds better than real. Then I kicked ‘Blackie’ to the blue channel (classic distortion) and BOOM! I can verify that there is some kind of magic pixie dust sauce, swirling around in the Blackbird’s tubes!

Next, it was on to my primary agenda, that of direct recording to my Universal Audio Apollo interface. I setup one direct path from Guitar to the Hi-Z input of Apollo’s channel 1, and then ran a TRS cable from the Blackbird’s 600 Ohm Balanced Out to Apollo’s Line-In on Channel 2. After A/B’ing the guitar through both, I decidedly preferred, once again, the Blackbirds “soundstage” to that of the guitar using just the Apollo’s Hi-Z direct in. I did find myself reaching for a little more middle and treble boost on the Blackbird’s dials in this mode, but It certainly was the closest ‘mimic’ of my Fender amp. Though not to scientific, I added in the PC-2A compressor before the Blackbird and readjusted UA Apollo channel 1 Hi-Z and channel 2 Line-In input gain volumes. Keeping things out of the red, I noticed that I can run the UA Apollo Channel 2 input comfortably at 30dB behind the PC-2A and the Blackbird. The Channel 1 Hi-Z input was short of that at 26dB. Nonetheless, I love that I have two options to use the PC-2A/Blackbird: (1) in front of an amp input for studio mic’ing or live, and (2) the Blackbird’s direct recording output which includes the green/blue/red channel voicing’s (when things need to be quiet in the home studio).

When my wife asks me what I want for this coming Christmas I will definitively say “another Blackbird”. Yes, I know I can only play one at a time, but I thought it was always better to have “two birds in hand”.

    Phil, keep tube’ing!

  88. Thomas Rollison - U.S.A. 1st April 2015

Went a bit different this time with two Telefunken 5965 in position 1 and 2 and an old GE 5965 in position 3. I even pulled out the Deoxit spray and cleaned the pins. That compliment of tubes renders the blue channel right at the sweet side of just breaking up while the red still has more than enough outright dirt to satisfy any hard rocker. Again, and I said it before, that box is absolute magic in front of any amp. Fidelity and presence for days. And so friggin’ responsive to everything in front of it including and most especially the guitar itself. I have never spent more time switching pickup configurations and tone settings. THANK YOU!

  89. Moses “Mostai” Staimez - U.S.A. 1st May 2015

I wanted to let you know that I’ve been using the Blackbird preamp extensively for the last 8 months and I’m absolutely in love with this thing. It is an incredible piece of gear that allows me to get a killer tube tone and take it with me anywhere I go. Together with the STEALTH power amp by ISP I can connect it to any speaker and get a killer tone with a killer volume. I do not carry my amp head with me no more 🙂 I think that the Blackbird is one of the best secrets in the industry. However, I already told about it to any of my colleagues and will continue to spread the word about it. Thanks so much!!!

  90. Dan Wilkinson 1st June 2015

I bought the Blackbird well over a year ago, and it’s been in play pretty much for practice and jam sessions. Nothing but rave reviews from me and my friends.

  91. Phil Gooch 1st July 2015

I’ve currently got my dream set up and finally realised the sound in my head! PC-2A with just a touch of compression going in to the Blackbird. Then split into the Delta-Trem and Strymon Timeline delay, and then into the Strymon Big Sky. It’s the best of both worlds, full, valve warmth goodness with that widescreen clarity and space of digital – in stereo! Recorded direct or into the PA it sounds fantastic, and no amps to lug around.

  92. Vincent Buuron - France 1st July 2015

I finally got my hands on an all original brand-new Blackbird this week. It was supposed to complete my beloved Tube Drive but it truly is a world of its own. As far as I’m concerned the Blackbird’s clean channel (reason I wanted one) blows me straight up into tone heaven, it truly lifts the blanket of my Princeton. The tonality panel is really truly fabulous, I could never get used to playing without this preamp again. Now I’m wondering if it would be a good idea to pop in an Effectrode tube compressor? Love to Sam and thanks for building ‘the sound’.

  93. Jeff Pavelec 1st September 2015

    You guys make superlative gear!

  94. Michael Bast - U.S.A. 1st October 2015

My Blackbird preamp continues to be the best friend my amp and pedal board ever met. Being able to wake up the front end of an amp with a relatively lower gain guitars is a great thing.

  95. Dave - Great Britain 1st October 2015

I know you have a fair waiting list so I’ve ended up recently picking up a used model of the Blackbird (in the UK). I did wonder why anyone would sell – he had a spare… I just wanted to feedback that it is a terrific piece of kit (as you already know). The quality and fitness for purpose makes it a real pleasure, I/O all really useful to me and the slow-start and selection relays really inspire confidence. The sound has it all covered.. it seems to be making a lot of things redundant!

  96. Guy Taylor - U.S.A. 1st November 2015

The Blackbird arrived today. And I’m in love already. Please pass on to Phil how amazing it is 🙂

  97. Nick Woods - Australia 1st December 2015

Sounds incredible. I often run my synths through this [the Blackbird ]too.

  98. Joe Hecht - U.S.A. 1st December 2015

Hey it’s Joe Hecht from the States checking in. Man I am so happy with that Blackbird! The pedal adds such a deep fullness to my tone is absolutely fantastic!! Lv It!! Question: Are you going to release the Phaseomatic Vacuum Tube Phaser? I would definitely like to purchase one of those too. I feel an addiction coming on. Let me know! Hope all is well there, happy holidays!

  99. Bob Bachman - U.S.A. 1st December 2015

I couldn’t be happier than I am with the four Effectrode pedals that I have so far! You definitely give your customers their moneys worth!!

  100. Jay Wilson - U.S.A. 1st December 2015

You know, I have gone through many pedals Phil. I am something of connoisseur now if I do say so myself and have been hired by a couple of prominent pedal designers over the past few years to trade my work for gear and it’s all been good stuff but yours… well it’s just unbeatable. At my past few CD release/support shows I have had, without exception, audience members raving about my great sound and I always smile and point at the BlackBird and PC-2A and say “it’s because of these”.

  101. Bruce Demaree 1st January 2016

You already know this but your products and company are amazing – thank you for being a such a bright beacon of quality and craftmanship!

  102. Pascal Vaucel - France 1st January 2016

I bought one of your Blackbird preamps, two weeks ago, and I must said it’s one of my favorite piece of gear. It sounds just fabulous, either direct recording through a Two Notes Torpedo C.A.B., or plugged in my guitar amps, in the loop or straight in.

  103. Nick Reffold - Great Britain 1st January 2016

I am so delighted with the Blackbird you just sold me I want to give a special thank you. I ordered the Blackbird yesterday near the end of the working day – a Friday yet! And it arrived at lunchtime today. It went straight on to my pedal board but I isolated it from everything else to give it a fair hearing. It just ‘blew me away’ I never heard a guitar sound like it – mainly because I have only ever played in private and mainly in a spare bedroom with master volume set just below the divorce threshold. I made me think immediately of trumpets with that clear resonant chimey kind sound that, I guess, can only come from valves (tubes). As I introduced more pedals to the Blackbird, the more I realised that they merely buggered up the sound of the Blackbird and would have to go on ebay. I am not talking about cheap pedals either! I have well over £500 worth of high quality pedals from ‘prestige’ brands sitting idle now. I have seen Effectrode pedals described as fearsomely expensive – not as expensive as buying four or five £125+ pedals that become redundant when you put them in front of a Blackbird! Now I seek advice. I wonder what replacement valves (tubes) you would advise me to go for? My kind of tonal preferences lie around the Ry Cooder, JJ Cale, Robben Ford, EC, Larry Carlton type of overdriven rather than distorted sounds, i.e. more blues than rock. What valves could I use to give me a wider choice of tones around that kind of crunchy to drive area? Of course, I now have an exciting few weeks or months checking out all kinds of permutations of my guitars with the Blackbird. I am already wondering whether adding more stages of gain might give more choices – in short, should I buy a Tube Drive – will it give me more range of tonal variation? I expect to have some cash available after I have off loaded 5 drive pedals into Ebay! Yours in crunchy tonal bliss.

  104. Jeromy Darling - U.S.A. 1st January 2016

Wow Phil. I was using an EHX LPB-2ube in a setup, with a Tech21 Sansamp. It worked fine but this [the Blackbird]…this was another world.

  105. Michael Foisy 1st January 2016

I just received my SR-71 [Blackbird] this morning. Holy Cow it is even more incredible than I could have imagined!! I setup the clean channel just like my Alembic preamp and it sounds very close, smooth and tight sound. The distortion channel is amazing. I’ve looked forever to find a distortion pedal that would work well with my basses. The SR-71 is it!! WOW!! With my Dingwalls it sounds ridiculous! Thanks so much for your input. It is one of the best gear buys I’ve ever made. Thanks

  106. Machin Bidule - France 1st February 2016

Spent some time with my Blackbird today, and I think I’m in love with the blue channel! I currently use it with a Catalinbread Belle Epoch and then into a Two Notes Torpedo Cab, and could not get a better sound for practicing and playing at home (especially when baby’s sleeping!). Thanks Phil!

  107. Christopher Daniel - U.S.A. 1st February 2016

I have two Blackbirds and use the main channels to enhance my “clean” amp sound. I never play without one of my Blackbirds on clean channel, its always on. I get ribbed about it sometimes but the same people regularly comment how warm and full bodied my clean sound is and if I need a little dirt it’s right there too. Thanks for the article, I love your work and dedication to excellence Phil and I am proud to own and use your pedals. Incidentally, I also have two Tube Drives and a Helios Fuzz that I will never part with.

  108. John Smith - U.S.A. 1st February 2016

I have been playing for 40 years and I would like to express that this is the best pedal I have ever played. You did a great job. I consider this an instrument not a pedal. The SR-71 [Blackbird] is the most amazing pre amp I have ever heard. I got mine on Friday and am blown away. Love the clean channel, but the blue is what does it for me. I have never played a Dumble but this is what I envision hearing. The mids are where it’s at with the gain around 1/4 up. The attack is unbelievable. Thanks for building something like this. It beautiful. John

  109. Drew Sparrow - Hawaii 1st February 2016

Holy Effectrode, this pedal [Blackbird] is great! It really brings my solid state to life and makes my new little Laney L5 studio really sing! Exactly what I wanted!!

  110. Sheldon - U.S.A. 1st February 2016

I received my new SR-71 [Blackbird] four hours ago and it is incredible. I play at churches and none of the churches allow backlining, so I had to find a way to get the ‘Blackface’ sound I to my pedal board, this pedal does it, I couldn’t be happier.

  111. Adam Rainstopper - U.S.A. 1st February 2016

Your new preamp [Blackbird] sounds absolutely amazing, I haven’t heard anything like it in years! I think the last ‘outboard’ stand-alone pre I heard that was capable of holding it together even at high-gain tones was a rackmount Soldano pre with a 4 digit price tag! Good work!?

  112. John Verity - Great Britain 1st March 2016

Blackbird’ by Effectrode – The soul of my tone.

  113. Troy Shanks - Great Britain 1st March 2016

Just thought that I’d let you know that I’ve been playing through the two Blackbirds today.

Haven’t been using them at the same time (but that’s a thought!) but have has one set to classic & the other to creamy (or the blue & red channel as I call them).

Setting both up for the light to middling end of crunch (vintage, un-boosted but fairly cranked power amp style tone – a tad past edge of breakup but not as much as if it was a humbucker slamming it) & using a Strat really showed off what the red channel is capable of. A very pleasing tight & defined tone for punchy rock rhythm guitar that sounded more evocative of HiWatt-era Who (say at Woodstock – should have plugged in my p90’s SG! 😀 ) than it did a totally cranked Plexi or “Bluesbreaker” (which the blue channel evokes slightly more to me – or even cranked tweed Fender Deluxe).

This tone for the red channel set like this (mid to lighter end of crunch with a Strat) worked brilliantly for stacking with your Tube Drive before it (or with the Tube-Vibe, Fire Bottle, Compressor or Mercury Fuzz either by themselves or in various combinations).

Plugged into the Marshall Vintage Modern 100 watt head & matching 4×12 cab I set the bass a lot lower on the red channel than on the blue & the treble a lot lower on the red than on the blue. With single coils you can dial bass to full & treble to minimum with middle at about 1:30 on the red channel. Gain at about 7:30 using the stock valves. Bias switched to up position.

By contrast I had the Blackbird that was set to the blue channel (using the same Strat – mostly on the bridge pickup throughout) with the bass at 1:30, middle at 11:00, treble at 3:15 & gain at 12:00. Bias switched to down position. These settings were going for same ballpark tone with both pedals but the different preamp “channels” sounded vastly different in texture & interaction between the frequency ranges.

The red has a tighter, more focused sound, the blue more ragged & looser. Both very nice textures & will be hard to choose one tone over the other for “set & forget” settings when I have to make way on this board for other Effectrodes later in the year & then move one Blackbird over to the other board that I have more of a mix of pedals with just my core-tone Effectrodes onboard that one (another Compressor & another Glass-A also being on that one with a bunch of non-Effectrode units).

The Glass-A is doing its job nicely pushing the signal through all of the cables for those rare moments when playing without at least one of the pedals switched on.

Setting the Tube Drive up for a similar amount of gain provided even more contrast with the other two. This is one really sweet pedal too, simpler controls yet still a richly complex & satisfying tone used either alone or as a pre-boost for either the red or blue channels of the Blackbird(s). Having these all set for the relatively lighter to light-medium end of overdriven crunchiness, combined with judicious signal chain placement allows for a multitude of tones switching different combinations in & out. When dialled in for personally optimised tonal usage the versatility of these units really have my sonic gardens of valve tone covered.

They are so responsive to playing they really are like a part of my amp (which again if very judiciously dialled in has a great bunch of valve drive tones – annoyingly not switchable with its possibly even better clean tone – at least not with having optimised settings for both clean & dirt, which is where the Effectrode valve dirt pedals come in & boost the versatility of the setup exponentially. The full fat clean tone of my amp for my ears sounds nicer than most other amps that I’ve played through (some others come close or are equal – again for my tastes) & it is also more (drive & fuzz) pedal friendly than most that I have experimented with (including all main classic Tweed & Blackface Fender types, Vox AC30’s, post-Plexi-type Marshalls, etc). Combined with the Effectrodes & some Strats, Les Pauls & a P90 SG it is “Sweet Tone Alabama”! 😀

Now excuse me while I go play some more guitar!

(& no need to rush the Delta-Trem & Phaseomatic – or to release both at the same time – I’ll definitely get both of them but my wallet is begging me to be kind! ;D

A few more observational notes on the drive pedals with P90’s feeding them with their darker & relatively higher output pickups feeding them (compared to the Strat).

To achieve similar ballpark tones (gain & EQ) to those mentioned in my notes that were based on using Strat, I dialled in these adjustments:

    Blue channel:

Bass moved down from 1:30 to 11:00; middle up from 11:00 to 12:30 (might have been set too low originally with the Strat, P90’s obviously have more mids, but mids can add more cutting frequencies too for darker pickups like P90’s); treble up from 3:15 to 3:30 & gain down from 12:00 to 10:00.

    Red channel:

Interestingly didn’t feel the need to change the EQ, red channel has a lot of top end & so didn’t feel the need to roll the treble up from minimum. These are new valves that came with the pedal. I believe that you heat them up a little bit before shipping but probably after they’ve had a bit more “breaking in” the treble can be brought up a bit more on the dial as I’ve found with the others. The gain though I rolled down from 7:30 to minimum (about 7:00 on a “clock-face”). This is probably still more gain than the Strat pickups through the red channel with the gain at 7:30. I left the bias switches in the same places as before (switching these might have further optimised the tone for the P90’s but I was loving the sound anyway & didn’t get around to that).

Thinking about how I like to use the Blackbird in this way (lower end of crunchy gain boosted when desired by the other Effectrodes) I can see that swapping out the 12AX7’s for lower gain valves like 12AU7’s could be worthwhile for me when funds permit, getting some nice NOS vintage ones that is. Regardless, players who might be more “vintage drive” oriented should really give the red channel a try with gain rolled all the way down. I realised that I was missing out on this extra great tone by using it as previously only at higher gain levels. Rolling down the volume & sometimes the tone from the guitar provided even more refinements & juicy tones through the red channel.

As it got later I brought the volume down a wee bit (not too much, just enough). This is where having the compressor on can really give a bit more of the “amp at higher volume” response & tonal breadth both for clean tones & for drive tones from the other Effectrodes (not to mention compensate slightly when swapping between different guitars with differently voiced pickups – if placed before the drives which is where I have it).

On the Tube Drive I maxed the tone control, drive set at 8:30. I had the tone control much lower on the Tube Drive when using the Strat (I forget where but no matter). In fact when I first got the Tube Drive, some time back now, I had that tone control in minimum when using the Strat. I mentioned “set & forget” in the other email but of course we hear things differently on different days at different times (also when playing at different volumes) so inevitably end up tweaking things. “Ball park settings” is probably the more accurate term, having settings that can be tweaked a little for each guitar.

The Mercury works great with all of the drive tones (Tube Drive, Blackbird blue channel, Blackbird red channel after it). I had the fuzz control at about 12:00 on that but easing off slightly on the gain on the overdrives downstream I brought the fuzz control up to 3:00 which imparted an added fatness to the lead fuzz tones (with a slight inevitable tradeoff of sensitivity to the guitar’s volume control). I just used the Mercury with the Strat today but it does provide that extra bit of zestiness when desired.

Tube-Vibe loved the red channel at lower gain after it, as it also does the blue channel & the Tube Drive. Plenty of Jimi-evoking tones (& much more) available when combined with any of the drives after it, but nice to hear tones that I hadn’t dialled in before.Tube-Vibe loves the Compressor too (set not too intensely).

Flipped to the lesser used Vibrato mode of the Vibe after having been in Chorus mode for a while. Had some nice unusual tones with the intensity & speed both at 12:00, & flipping between the vintage & smooth tonal response modes. Sounded like a warped record or stretched out tape. Can think of some interesting applications for recording with those sounds.

Switched the Diamond Memory Lane 2 on & off for added ambience when desired. Baxandall EQ tone set flat for repeats which were also set for low mix, nice bit of modulation depth & speed dialled in too. Lovely pedal but it is keeping the place on the board warm for the day when a nice golden-hued Effectrode Echo-Delay (hopefully with all “heads” combos, added worn disc settings & a non-spec tap tempo) can take its rightful place. Can move the ML2 over to one of the other two boards come that day! 🙂

Okay, probably enough there to wrap up with. Just thought hat I’d share my findings as it might be of interest how different users find their tonal satisfaction from your stellar creations.

  114. Michael Ashton - Australia 1st May 2016

Wow, just got my best Carlos Santana tone ever, and that was straight into a PA. Also P-bass into the PA is awesome too, octave pedal into the dirty channel can create some great syntesizer type bass sounds. Blackbird is incredible…

  115. Douglas Robertson 1st May 2016

I just recently started using the Blackbird as a preamp for a Rivera stereo guitar power amp and, wow, is it amazing! If I had one wish right now it would be the addition of an FX loop, but that’s minor. I just bought my third(!) PC-2A. The first one I gave as a gift to a guitar player far, far better than I am; the second one hasn’t left my friend’s studio for two years; but this one is for me! I think it’s the best one yet – it has the “green labeled” tube. Or, more likely, I just get better at using compression. My most important pedal by far.

  116. Yoel Kreisler - U.S.A. 1st June 2016

You have an INCREDIBLE unit [Blackbird] Phil. The fact that a complete gear nut like my can feel confident in such a minimal rig is really a testament to how amazing it really is.

  117. Vladimir Yakemenko 1st October 2016

I absolutely adore my Blackbird with transformer balanced output for home recording, it’s the honeymoon which as of now goes for three months straight. I now plan to use it live for connection into returns/Inputs of guitar amps on stage. I prefer sound on balanced out in most cases for recordings.

  118. Tony Kotula - U.S.A. 1st October 2016

I forgot to say thank you. I used the pedal [Blackbird] a TON and after testing on various amps, I realized I was WRONG with certain settings on the amps and then the pedal performed wonderfully… I have been doing this a long time and I can’t believe what I was doing wrong! The dist channel with certain amps became super tactile and responsive… the way I hoped for. Kind of like playing an acoustic guitar that gives feedback to your senses each note or strike of the strings. Many amps or preamp/amp combos gloss over this important and authentic feeling one can have with the right equipment. You folks really did achieve it here and I am most appreciative. You guys take care! Best wishes!

THAT is GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!! THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That will make my system really really much better with a greater number of sound choices when playing live. What a GREAT sound I am getting out of this thing!!!!!!!!!!! So funny, I have been through so much gear. But in this case, this pedal with an old Mesa Boogie Satellite with a EV12L speaker in it is creating great results… I have the Soldano SLO which is great… but, there is a synergy taking place and I am getting amazing tones with a 59LP Historic Reissue as well as a California built Charvel with stop tail piece and a McCarty PRS… all are working VERY well with this little set-up.

  119. Greg Larson 1st October 2016

Thanks. I cannot tell you the countless hours I spend with my PC-2A, Tube-Vibe and Tube Drive. I just picked up a SR-71 from Sam and it sounds awesome. I run them through my Hiwatt SA212 and mostly use a TC Electronics Alter Ego for delay and a Strymon Big Sky for Reverb… mostly play Strats and Teles I make from parts… please make a Binson Tube Delay!!!! Thanks for rocking my world. I am a different man after I spend time with your products. Best Regards,

  120. Shay Larson 1st November 2016

Thanks guys, got my Blackbird back and couldn’t be happier. The tube pots work now and, I think for the first time, I can really hear what that pedal can do. I get it now and it sounds great, make sure to thank phil and tell him I’m honored it was him, personally, who worked on it. I’m stunned, I can’t believe how much better this is (especially with the 12AT7 in the v3 pot)… might even kick my Kingley Juggler off the board (similar to the idea of the BB, but simpler) – a pedal I never thought would leave. Great job guys, and thanks again. Hopefully will have smooth sailing now *crosses fingers*

  121. John Pavlo - U.S.A. 1st November 2016

Thanks for the comeback. Great to have someone to talk to after the sale. What a great product [Blackbird] you have produced. It really is more than just a pedal, it’s an amp.

  122. Matt Harris - Great Britain 1st December 2016

Just a quickie to say thanks again for your help. Just set bias at 1k6… ooohhhh… my *** what a difference. It had been around 6k. I always liked the clean and found usable sounds in the blue and red. But now its much, much better. Had an hour since sorting the bias and getting better and better. Needing to get head around redialling it in but great sounds. Have settled for now on following valves: V1 – 12AX7; V2 – 12AT7; V3 – 12AY7.Fantastic combination. And all valves I had here which is always good 😉 has stepped it from being a good pedal to really, really good. It had never quite matched my views on the other three Effectrode units on the board. But still was better than competition. Thanks again have a great xmas.

  123. Tim Ray 1st January 2017

Loving the Blackbird(s). Going into (effects and then) an old Demeter 100w tube mono power amp to cabs. It roars. And beautiful clean sound.

  124. Scott Nichols 1st January 2017

Thank you for your response Phil. Just or your information, I’m running the Blackbird 600Ohm transformer output into the Gold Brick speaker sim and straight to the PA. This sounds so good its amazing. Good enough that I’m selling my Two Notes Torpedo CAB. I miss the power amp sim a bit in the Torpedo but the Triad transformer on the Blackbird helps make up for it and is a big improvement in tone over the direct line out. Simple, all analog, sounds great. What’s not to like? To say that I’m sold on your Gold Brick design would be an understatement.

  125. Richard Clough - Great Britain 1st January 2017

My Blackbird pedal arrived earlier this week. It’s a keeper – far superior to the Tech 21 Blonde Deluxe it’s replacing. 🙂

  126. Laurent Guardo - France 1st February 2017

Hi Phil! I am recording for my next album with your Blackbird!!!! WAW!!!!! I used it to reamp a bass track to give it more definition in the mix with the creamy fuzz of the hot-rod channel 😉 WAW!!!!!!! Also on a National square-neck with slide! WAW again!!!!! Thank you so much for those amazing tones!!!!! Cheers!!!

  127. Richard Clough - Great Britain 1st March 2017

Thanks for your help both on the phone and via email. When we talked last time you mentioned that the external bias switch for v1 had been changed to a presence switch. Sounds good, but it’s not labelled on the case – just so you know.

I’ve settled for some NOS tubes – Siemens EC883, GE JAN 5751, Mullard Holland 12AV7. Somehow seem to have acquired 25 tubes during this experimentation, but it’s been fun.

Really enjoying the Blackbird & PC2A combination!

  128. Tony Kotula - U.S.A. 1st March 2017

I was unsure if you got my picture that I sent last night… by the way, I do really love this pedal and find it hard to part with. I am stunned that I have transitioned from a real Soldano SLO to your pedal and then a stereo system I built into two old (but reconditioned by me) Mesa Satellites . . . these are powered speakers essentially — the speakers are EVM 12L -s and the clean sound coming from this system is remarkable… of course the other sounds are terrific too.

  129. Brandon Eberhardt - Hawaii 1st March 2017

Hi, this is Brandon from Honolulu, HI. I recently bought an Effectrode Blackbird. I could tell right when I started playing it that it was special. I’m so pleased with it, it’s the best pedal I’ve ever owned and will now be selling my Fractal Axe FX Rig. I eventually plan on using all Effectrode pedals, as they are among the absolute best pedals ever created in the way of value, tone, musicality, sound and build quality.

  130. Freddie Penido - Brazil 1st April 2017

I just got the SR-71 and I HAD to give this feedback: what an amazing amazing pedal! It’s the best, most versatile pedal I’ve ever had the pleasure to play with it. I live in Brazil and we don’t have Effectrodes around so a friend bought it for me from Portugaland I even sold most of my pedals to cover the cost of this one, but it totally worth the sacrifice. I kinda feel like thanking you for this great work in some manner so I’ll try to make some videos about this one, I just can’t believe that there is only few reviews about it! Well, all in all, I would like to say “thank you!” from your newest fan =)

  131. Laurent Guardo - France 1st August 2017

I am recording so many tracks with the Blackbird! Very cool! The Tube-Vibe with the 12-string Rickenbacker is amazing. Keep me posted for the Delta-Trem and Phaseomatic. I am trying to postpone the mixes to be able to add tracks with the Delta-Trem and Phaseomatic. Cheers warm regards

  132. Alan Leslie - Australia 1st September 2017

I’ve been playing with it this afternoon, trying to understand its subtleties and I think it is GREAT… wonderful “old” tone… I love it. Many colours from slight movements of all the controls… I am really impressed… Many thanks for a great product.

  133. Tome Daly - U.S.A. 1st September 2017

I hope the week is winding down well at the shop for you and Sam! Well… my ‘Blackbird’ arrived! Unfortunately, I had very little time last night to try it – but there was no way I was going to bed without plugging that puppy in and taking it for a test ride! I left all of the settings @ 12:00 at first – plugged it in – and it took exactly two strums on my guitar to know that this is what I was looking for!! You are officially my new “TONE HERO”!!! This unit added the missing warmth, thickness and presence I was looking for – and that is with only playing around with it for about an hour – WITHOUT being inserted into my pedal chain yet… alongside some OCD, Reverb and slap-back delay!! It seems to match up very well with my Genz Benz solid state amp. I can’t wait to spend some more time with it this weekend. Thanks for the great workmanship on the unit… quality peace… you should be very proud of your unit. … and thanks for all your help… I’ll keep you posted.

  134. Mark Taylor - Australia 1st September 2017

Thanks for the fast delivery of my new Tube-Vibe and Blackbird pedals. They’re too good to be called pedals actually – they are amazing high-end amplifiers. I will buy more from you when you have more stock and hopefully new products. The fast delivery just makes a great product even better.

  135. John Little - Great Britain 1st September 2017

Hello Sam and Effectrode people, Finally got to the U.K. And my pedal [Blackbird] is here. I’ll have a chance to play it when I get home but just to say it’s absolutely stunning to look at 🥇. The design alone is worth the money, Thank you, john

  136. Dale Smith - U.S.A. 1st November 2017

Sam: I received my order this morning 11/4/17 (that was fast)… and its all you and Phil Taylors fault that (the neighbors) and I are going to be up all night playing with these pedals… they are more than as advertised. I can’t put my finger on the word I’m looking for (clean, precise, ice pick sharp… I don’t know) but I do know that with the very first pluck of my tele’ I heard stuff that I’d never heard before… “Hey Joe” and “St James infirmary” morphed into long drawn renditions of songs that I did not know I had in me… and it’s hard to grasp that the amp is in overdrive without any blur. Speaking of amp I’m using a Fender Deluxe Reverb Reissue (68) and the custom channel loves these pedals… Speaking of pedals I’m most impressed with the Leveling Amp. It combined with the Tube-Vibe is quite a combo for creativity. I’m running all thru the Blackbird but as yet have not got the Blackbird to be a player… the clean channel is just that, very very clean but when I go to the overdrive channel I get quite a hum so I’ve kind of left it alone for now. I just threw everything together so its quite a jumble… I’ll sort it out later when I get more time and hopefully eliminate the overdrive hum… but for now I’m more than pleased… this was $$ well spent. Thanks Dale

I just received my Blackbird and Atomic pedals today. Every time I get one of your pedals it’s like Christmas. I really appreciate the effort and dedication that goes into creating, manufacturing, and supporting these devices. To me, each one is a work of art unto itself. Now I own the TD-2A, TV-5A, PM-2A, SR-71, and AT-1A.

  138. Timmy C Pitschka - U.S.A. 1st December 2017

    Dear Effectrode,

I recently found the Blackbird Tube Preamp through the Googles, searching for “tube pre-amps for guitar” and as soon as I started digging into the product page and watching/hearing people demo the unit on YouTube, I knew I had to have one.

I have been playing guitar for almost 40 years and have had some great tones, amps and pedals over that time, but this?! This pedal blew my mind completely! I record at home these days and have put out two albums with t2k over the last few years. Due to space, noise and complexity constraints, I haven’t mic’d a guitar amp in forever and use a mix of pedals and plugins to get decent clean and dirty tones for recording. Probably some of the best sounds I’ve gotten recently have been from the Native Instruments Guitar Rig series, 5 being the most versatile. They have some great cabinet sims and you can adjust the “bias” and “sag” of each modeled amp head to great feel and affect. But… they are all still lacking a certain “something”. Yup, you guessed it, no TUBES! “Tubeless” is great for riding bicycles, but not so great for good guitar tone!

Enter the Effectrode Blackbird. I got mine just yesterday (uber fast shipping from you all in the UK, amazing and thank you!) and dropped it into my pedal chain straightaway. Starting with the green clean mode, it was exactly as I had hoped. Fat, round, smooth, warm, chiming three dimensional goodness came from my monitors! And all with that hint of push and pull you can only get from a real amp/cabinet, responding so nicely to my forceful or restrained picking with plectrum or fingers. Then, I moved to the red and blue channels and… Oh. My. Wow! the “creamy” setting was just awesome! I could hardly believe I was running direct, it was exactly the sound I’ve had in my head for many years, but so difficult to get without mic’ing up a real amp and cabinet!

I’m running direct through a compressor, volume pedal, chorus and delay pedals to Logic with great results. And, the effects chain ends with this little beauty – hands down the best cabinet simulator I’ve ever used

    https://neunaber.net/products/iconoclast

It’s stereo in and out, which is perfect for keeping my favorite delays stereo all the way through. Anyway, the combo of the Blackbird and the Iconoclast is just fantastic and has brought such needed LIFE into my playing and creating again.

Thank you for such a fantastic product, I just can’t stop thinking about it and count the minutes that I can be back in my studio and making/recording music again!

    Take care,

  139. Charlie Shiparo - U.S.A. 1st January 2018

My name is Charle Shapiro, and here at Tone Tubby USA, I participate in technical support, marketing, and the design of new speakers. I am the single point through which our new models and modifications to older models must pass through before going off to our ‘golden-ear’ testers and valued customers.

I run all of our speakers through rigorous testing across multiple types of tube amplifiers. The pedals I use are the Mercury Tube Fuzz, Fire Bottle Tube Booster, Glass-A Triode Buffer, PC-2A Tube Compressor, Super High Definition Leveling Amplifier, Black Bird Vacuum Tube Preamp, and the Tube Drive Overdrive. I have two sets of these pedals that I use. These pedals are used in different combinations and singularly to stress and test all Tone Tubby Speaker models.

Effectrode pedals offer me everything that solid-state pedals offer and a wide sonic pallet that solid-state devices, due to their inherent limitations, are not capable of. I find that use of solid-state pedals pushes my hearing and testing of speakers into one type of speaker design and construction.

Tube pedal are more dynamic, life-like, musical, and revealing of different types of cone surrounds, speaker cones, voice coils, magnets types, and other treatment that allow me to make fairer decisions on Tone Tubby speakers.

Effectode pedals, further, allows me to swap out 12A?7 type tubes and dial in similar sounds from the late 1940’s through 2017 with different tubes.

As a note, I do test and use one solid-state pedal, which will remain un-named.

Tone Tubby speakers that the Effectrode pedal have helped me bring to market include: The Chicago Blue, The Winterland, The Purple Haze, The Green 40/40 A and B, The RoseBud 68, The RoseGold 68, The Orange Crush, The Gold Rush, modifications to current speaker models, and a several new models that are currently undergoing testing.

Effectrode’s Phil and Sam are wonderful people to do business with.

  140. Julian Foster - Great Britain 1st January 2018

Hi Phil, Just wanted to say how pleased I am with my Blackbird! I have barely scratched the surface with it yet to be honest, although I can confirm the clean channel sounds amazing with an acoustic! It really gives an extra depth and sparkle – similar to replacing old strings with new – again really haven’t had a lot of time to experiment but I think this has huge potential, especially for picking – just need a couple of weeks off work now!

Also spotted your compressor which sounds like the real deal – do please let me know when that is back in stock, I’m saving up! (will it use the original valves still or are you having to find an alternative?)

Thanks again and keep up the quality work! All the best, Julian

PS the Blackbird also looks beautiful – shame its attached to my pedalboard now or I would keep it on a display shelf in the lounge 😉

  141. Francis Chartier - Canada 1st February 2018

Hi Phil, Just wanted to let you know I received the blackbird about a week ago. I’m sure you’ve heard this one before numerous times but it sounds incredible. I thought my amp sounded good before but now I’m playing everything through the blackbird. Will you be producing more mercury fuzz pedals? Also, if the echorec becomes available, I’d love to be on the list. Thanks for your hard work! Cheers.

  142. Andy Fortune 1st February 2017

    Hello,
I just acquired a used recent Blackbird with the Presence switch.
    Best,
    Andy

  143. David Burns - Australia 1st March 2018

  144. Paul Monas - Australia 1st April 2018

Hi guys, I just wanted to give you some feedback on my Blackbird, Wonderful preamp! My close friend David DeVito acquired one and I’ve decided that it’s an irreplaceable part of my live rig. The best tone I’ve ever experienced – thank you Effectrode!!
